How to Use Azelaic Acid and Retinoids for Sensitive Skin: A 3-Month Guide
Updated: Sep 28
Azelaic acid and Retinoid combo is everywhere right now. But if you have sensitive skin, how you introduce it matters.

Here’s my 3-month plan
MONTH 1: Start slow
Use 10% azelaic acid and a low-strength retinol.
Weekly night routine:
Monday: Azelaic acid
Tuesday: Moisturizer only
Wednesday: Retinol
Thursday: Moisturizer only
Friday: Azelaic acid
Saturday: Moisturizer only
Sunday: Retinol
MONTH 2
If your skin has adjusted well, you can increase azelaic acid to 3 to 4 nights a week.
Continue retinol on 2 to 3 nights.
You can use moisturizer on the nights your skin feels dry.
If 10% azelaic acid works well for you, you can move to 15%.
MONTH 3
If your skin is tolerating the routine well, you have two options.
Option 1: Continue your retinol and azelaic acid.
Option 2: Move from retinol to retinal/prescription retinoid + prescription azelaic acid (20%) under your derm’s supervision.
If you need prescription treatment, your dermatologist might prescribe tretinoin.
Start with the strength and frequency your dermatologist recommends. Do not start tretinoin simply because internet told you so.
In the morning, you can use 10% azelaic acid, moisturizer and broad-spectrum SPF 30 to 50.
Best Azelaic Acid Products - Dermatologist Recommended
My personal favorite is the Sesderma Azelac Ru Serum.
My second favorite is Anua Azelaic Acid 10 Hyaluron Redness Soothing Serum
A budget-friendly option is the The Ordinary Azelaic Acid 10% Suspension Brightening Cream.
And remember, retinoids are not for everyone
No retinoids during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or planning pregnancy, speak to your doctor before using them.
If your skin is already inflamed, extremely dry or irritated, do not start a retinoid and azelaic acid without discussing it with a dermatologist.
The goal is to find the highest frequency your skin tolerates without damaging your skin barrier.
